Standard endotracheal tubes are fundamental, general-purpose instruments for airway management, whereas
double-lumen endobronchial tubes are specialized gold standard devices for thoracic anesthesia; they are not interchangeable.
Both are cuffed, artificial intratracheal airways that can be connected to a ventilator for positive-pressure ventilation and the prevention of aspiration. The standard single-lumen endotracheal tube is widely used for the vast majority of surgeries, emergency resuscitation, and critical respiratory support; it provides ventilation to both lungs without enabling lung isolation and serves as the foundation of airway management. In contrast, the double-lumen endobronchial tube is primarily used for thoracic surgeries requiring single-lung ventilation and lung isolation, as well as for critical unilateral pulmonary conditions; it has a limited scope of application, is unsuitable for long-term placement, and cannot replace the standard endotracheal tube for routine airway management.
Similarities
1. Both involve endotracheal intubation to establish an artificial airway for mechanical ventilation;

1. Structure: A standard tube has a single lumen and a single cuff; a double-lumen tube features two independent lumens and two cuffs (a tracheal cuff and a bronchial cuff).
2. Ventilation: A standard tube allows only for bilateral lung ventilation; a double-lumen tube supports bilateral ventilation but also enables single-lung ventilation and lung isolation.
3. Function: A standard tube allows for ventilation and suctioning of the airway as a whole; a double-lumen tube allows for the separate suctioning of secretions from the left and right lungs.
4. Indications: Standard tubes are used for most general anesthesia procedures and ICU respiratory support; double-lumen tubes are primarily used for thoracic surgeries and cases requiring lung isolation.
5. Positioning and Placement: Standard tubes can be positioned via auscultation and are suitable for long-term placement; double-lumen tubes require fiberoptic bronchoscopy for positioning and are not suitable for long-term placement.
