Characteristics and Classification of Tip-forming machine

Tip-forming machine is specialized for the thermal processing of medical-grade silicone catheter tips. Through precise heating and mold-based shaping, it tapers and closes the catheter end to create a smooth, rounded tip—ideal for products such as HSG catheters and urinary catheters. The machine ensures consistent control over tip dimensions, wall thickness, and surface appearance, while preventing burrs or cracking. This results in a smooth insertion process that minimizes mucosal trauma, making it an essential piece of equipment for the precision post-processing of catheters.

I. Key Features

1. Precise Localized Heating: Heating is applied exclusively to the small tip section of the catheter, leaving the main body unaffected. This prevents deformation, oxidation, or discoloration of the tubing. The resulting tip is smooth, free of flash or burrs, and meets the low-trauma requirements for interventional catheters.
2. Programmable and Controllable Parameters: Equipped with a touchscreen PLC interface, the system allows for precise adjustment of temperature, heating duration, feed thrust, and cooling time. Servo-driven feeding ensures controllable thrust (with a resolution of 0.1N on select models), guaranteeing high batch-to-batch consistency. Process parameters can be saved, facilitating compliance with ISO traceability requirements for medical devices.
3. Rapid Mold Changeover: Molds can be quickly swapped to produce various tip geometries—such as spherical, conical, beveled, sealed, flared, or tapered—accommodating a wide range of catheters (e.g., HSG catheters, CVCs, urinary catheters, sheath introducers, and PICCs).
4. Cleanroom Compatibility: Constructed primarily from 304 stainless steel with a dust-free, clean-surface design, the equipment is suitable for use in cleanroom environments. Rapid shaping is achieved through efficient air or water cooling.
5. Broad Material Compatibility: Compatible with various thermoplastic medical-grade materials, including PE, PP, PVC, TPU, PEBAX, and FEP.
6. Flexible Configuration: Available in single-station or dual-station setups, with options ranging from compact benchtop models (ideal for R&D and prototyping) to fully automated, high-volume production systems.

II. Classification (by heating method – industry standard)

1. High-Frequency (RF/Induction) Tip-Forming Machine [Mainstream for mass production]
- Principle: Uses an electromagnetic field to rapidly heat specific areas of the mold or tubing; heat is highly localized, allowing for fast heating and cooling cycles.
- Advantages: Precise temperature control, short cycle times, smooth finished surfaces, and minimal burr formation. Ideal for TPU and PU interventional catheters (e.g., HSG catheters, central venous catheters).
- Disadvantages: Higher equipment costs; requires molds made from specific, compatible materials.

2. Hot-Mold Contact-Type Tip Forming Machine
- Principle: The metal mold is equipped with an integrated heating element; heat is transferred through direct contact between the mold and the tubing.
- Advantages: Low cost, simple structure, and easy to learn; suitable for basic sealing of PVC or PE tubing and for creating rounded tips on catheters.
- Disadvantages: The heated zone is relatively large, which can lead to scorching or the formation of flash (excess material); results are generally mediocre when forming complex, long-tapered tips.

3. Hot-Air Tip Forming Machine
- Principle: Non-contact heating via hot-air convection.
- Advantages: Highly versatile; does not require metal molds; suitable for balloon welding, thin-walled or heat-sensitive materials, and R&D prototyping.
- Disadvantages: Poor heating uniformity, lower consistency in batch production, and relatively low mass-production efficiency.

4. Infrared Heating Type (rarely used as a standalone method)
- Utilizes infrared radiation heating; primarily used for thin-walled or coated tubing, often serving as an auxiliary heating source.

Additional Classifications (Other Dimensions)

- By Workstation: Single-station, dual-station, or multi-station (dual-station units can process two catheters simultaneously, featuring independent temperature control for each).
- By Automation Level: Benchtop semi-automatic (for prototyping and small-batch production) or fully automatic with auto-loading/unloading (for high-volume production lines).
- By Mold Type: Metal molds or glass molds (glass molds offer higher transparency, ideal for catheters that require visual inspection).

Simplified Selection Guide

- For HSG (hysterosalpingography) catheters, PICCs, sheath catheters, and high-quality interventional catheters → High-frequency RF (radio frequency) machines.
- For standard PVC urinary catheters, simple tip-rounding, or projects with limited budgets → Thermal mold (heated die) machines.
- For R&D prototyping, specialized thin-walled components, or balloon welding → Hot-air (thermal air) machines.
